“Not right now, buddy.”
You hate how often you hear yourself say it.
You missed them all day. So why does being home feel like something else to get through?
“Dad, come play.”
“Can you help me with this?”
“Watch this!”
You just got home. You haven’t even changed out of your work clothes. You want ten minutes where nobody needs anything.
Later, the kids are in bed. Your wife asks about your day.
“Fine. Just tired.”
You sit down together and pick up your phone.
You were home. You wanted to be more present. You want to be the dad who says,
“Grab your glove. Let’s go.”
Who gets down on the floor. Does the funny voice at bedtime. Actually watches when his kid says, “Watch this.”
You want to talk to your wife about something besides bills and who’s picking up the kids.
And you still want a little time for yourself. Pick up your guitar. Play a game. Do something you enjoy instead of scrolling until it’s time for bed.
Work matters. You just don’t want it getting the best of you every day.
